Position Summary

The Minister of Youth Ministries is a part-time position that directly oversees and provides all spiritual leadership, organization and creative support for leading the youth (7th -12th Grade).  The Youth Minister will model a life of faithful service to God; create opportunities for the youth to connect and grow in their relationships with God, each other and the church; engage the youth in the ministry of building relationships with others and journeying with them to where God desires them to be; empower parents and train leaders; and encourage, engage and equip youth to go and serve God through missions and outreach in our community and in the world. This position reports to the Staff Parish Relations Team for administrative duties and will take functional supervision from the Lead Pastor.

Pastor/Minister of Youth Ministries

Hours/ Salary/Probationary Term

The Youth Minister at Good Shepherd UMC is a part time position. He/she is expected to be present with the Youth on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings; attend church staff meetings, and spend other time with the Youth or preparing for Youth programs/activities. The average work week will be (20) hours a week, more or less depending on activities. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The first ninety (90) days of employment will be considered a probationary period in order to assess the progress of the Youth program under the supervision of the Youth Ministers direction.

Spiritual Expectations & Education Development

  • The Youth Minister is a spiritual leader and is expected to be a committed follower of Jesus Christ, seeking to know, love and serve God in alignment with Our Vision…Uniting with the Holy Spirit in restoring the bent and broken, through unconditional love and grace, transforming each person into a fully devoted follower of Jesus, passionately serving our community and the world for the glory of God… or more simplified CONNECT…GROW…SERVE…GO.
  • Expected to have a servant’s heart as a teacher and mentor as well as a drive toward building community with the youth and connecting them within the greater GSUMC community of believers.
  • Willing to be “last” as a servant, having a humble heart.
  • Growing in their personal faith by regularly practicing spiritual disciplines (prayer, devotion, scripture reading) and being in prayer for the youth, their families and GSUMC.
  • The Youth Minister will attend at least one education opportunity as recommended by the Lead Pastor or SPRC in consultation with the Youth Leadership Team, and read at least one new youth ministry leadership book each year.

The Youth Minister is expected to be effective and focused around these areas:

CONNECT (Welcome & Hospitality, Communication)

 

  • Communicate with all Pastors, staff, youth, adult leaders and parents frequently.
  • Ability to develop worship elements for the youth, outside of Sunday morning service times.
  • Be able to relate and effectively connect to youth and parents through oral and written communications.
  • Have a high level of initiative, motivation, enthusiasm, flexibility and positive attitude.
  • Ability to minister to the needs of the youth including beyond normal programming times, including hospital visits, emergencies, and crisis moments.
  • Be actively involved in the life of the church beyond the youth ministry.
  • Be able to maintain confidences, effectively listen and communicate, and have the ability to observe, intervene and resolve conflicts with youth or adults in a productive and God-honoring way.

 

GROW (Discipleship)

  • Working knowledge of the Bible, Christian doctrine, and the Methodist tradition.
  • Work closely with the Lead Pastor to ensure the youth program is in harmony and supports the overall vision and mission of the church.
  • Have proven experience in teaching, mentoring, and directing an eclectic group of youth in an engaging manner and working with a team of people.
  • Attend monthly Youth Council meeting and make reports at bi- monthly Church Council

meetings.

 

  • Contribute to the Youth Council in the formulation and implementation of the long range (1-2 year) vision of the youth program.
  • Recruit, develop, and train parent volunteers and student as leaders and volunteers.
  • Coordinate the teaching, curriculum, and process of Confirmation in collaboration with the Lead Pastor.
  • Coordinate Sunday school classes including teaching responsibilities.

 

 SERVE (Missions & Outreach)

  • Lead students in opportunities to serve the community through Project Transformation,

Society of St. Andrew, Open Table, and other local missions

 

  • Provide opportunities for students to serve within various aspects of the church, utilizing

their spiritual gifts and using them for the Glory of God through assisting in teaching, music

ministry, and areas where students’ spiritual gifts are fostered.

 

GO (Evangelism)

  • Maintain a sustained, intentional outreach to youth in Church and community through

attendance at sporting events, drama productions, concerts, Chrysalis and any other

important events in the life of the youth to include attending two school

related events per month during the school year. They are not expected to attend every

youth’s events.

 

  • Coordinate the organization and implementation of all youth events and mission trips.

 

Other Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that Safe Sanctuary policies are met for all youth programs and events and keep records of Safe Sanctuary certified volunteers on file and up to date. Adherence to Safe Sanctuary policies strictly required.
  • Ensure a database of records is kept of student information, including contact information for students and parents, and medical permission forms.
  • Skilled in the use of technology including social media, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, e-mail, text messaging, etc.)
  • Possess strong delegation and organizational skills.
  • Oversee the youth department budget, equipment, organization and volunteers and help implement the long term vision of the youth ministry.
  • Be present with youth in the 8:45 Worship Service unless ill or out of town.
  • Applicants with family must make arrangements that allow Youth Ministry responsibilities to take precedence while involved in church youth functions.
